Global Wine Industry Outlook
Over the last 15 years, the worldwide winemaking industry experienced a real revolution.
Between the years 90’s and until 2008/09, the world competition took place in two continental blocs, Europe and North America. This scenery has brought two important consequences: a progressive overcrowding of suppliers in a handful of countries and a great conflict on the sales dynamics of “old world”.
These countries signed a reform of the CMO (Common Market Organization) in order to save their own internal market.
This situation together the 2009 economic crisis, change the old strategies of all competitors in this market segment and only the providential burst into the global scenery of the Asian bloc saves the world situation: the Australians take their breath again, the Chileans almost completely move to the East and the Europeans are covering spaces of manoeuvre.
Currently, some emerging wines are trying to become a category: for Italy we can mention the names of Grillo siciliano, Vermentino sardo-toscano, Nero di Troia (!), whereas for the French, we have a pole position for rosé wines and Grenache and for the Spanish, Albarino and Garnacha.
Other phenomena are coming back, such as Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand that is driving the Kiwi’s exploit in the USA and in Europe, whereas the Chileans, Australians, Argentineans, Americans and South Africans try to find new and rich “grazing land” for their historical “thoroughbred horses”.
WHAT IS THE WINE HANDLING IN EUROPEAN UNION?
Spain, Italy and France are three important markets in European and worldwide winemaking industry; their exportation shipped 56.6% of all wine exports in 2016 (the figure shows the aggregate of sparkling, bottled and bulk wine).
The wellness growth of Asian bloc has expanded the trade, in fact the European wine’s destination are more far than before the 2013.
Currently, the European wine is sell, not only in the “old countries” like USA, Germany, UK and Switzerland but many liters reach also Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and China.
TRANSPORT OF PERISHABLE GOOD.
Temperature changes alter chemical and physical structure of many goods. Intense heat causes foods like chocolate to melt, extreme cold leads to liquids freezing. Furthermore, the rapid temperature variations should be avoided to prevent the formation of water vapour that modify the status of many commodities like sugar or flour. Wine sent to non-European countries travel always longer, usually by sea, inside containers whose temperature it is often not controlled (only 10% of existing containers they are thermo protect), thus exposing the product with prolonged conditions of thermal stress.
The ideal storage temperature of a wine is usually of 12-15°C. The problems associated at high temperatures during transport are related to the risk of their oxidation (browning, consumption of SO2, hint of acetaldehyde, bitter, ethyl carbamate, pouring of the caps), re-fermentation (effervescence, loss of sweetness, uncorking) and environmental contamination (scalping), with effects negatives on colour, aroma, flavour and stability (turbidity and presence of precipitate).
It is estimated that 12% of the wine shipped by ship is subjected to temperature greater than 40°C for a maximum 19 hours, while around 55% of the wine meets temperatures between 30-40°C for one maximum of 112 hours. Therefore, only the remaining 33% of the wine is transported at a temperature less than 30°C.
An Italian study about wine intermodal shipments from Italy to Brazil by container, has shown that the critical points are represented by the stops in the various ports during the transhipment.
